Confronting Training Myths

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

When it comes to employee training and development, it’s often hard to distinguish fact from fiction. Most companies know they need to invest in their employees, but there are pervasive misconceptions in the marketplace that can negatively affect the way organizations view and conduct training. One such misconception is that training will solve most internal problems. This is an overly simplistic approach that often exacerbates problems. Myriad factors create internal issues at a company, and instead of using training as a cure-all, management should uncover the root causes of an issue before applying a solution. Another commonly held belief is that training is a waste of both time and money. Some managers will argue that more often than not, training programs amount to paid holidays. While this may be true of poorly planned, poorly conducted training programs, it certainly isn’t true for all of them. This attitude will inevitably hurt the company in the long run by keeping the organization’s workforce behind the curve.
