Conversations About Mistakes Should Be in the Future Tense

Everyone makes mistakes. The saying is true personally and professionally, but how managers respond to their employees’ mistakes can set the stage for education and growth or frustration and resentment. Let’s say an employee screws up big time. Their manager comes to them upset and opens with, “What were you thinking?” Immediately, this puts the employee on the defensive, and regardless of the conversation, both parties will likely leave just as upset as when it started.
