Crafting More Effective Leadership Programs

Tuesday, January 10, 2017

An organization’s culture is shaped by its leadership. That’s why many HR professionals will say creating strong leaders is a top priority for their companies. However, according to a recent Deloitte survey, 89 percent of companies say a lack of effective leadership is a growing concern. Companies spend billions every year on leadership development programs, but few have anything to show for the investment; the survey revealed 40 percent of companies believe these programs provided little return, with 24 percent saying there was no value at all. For leadership development to be successful, management must first understand a company’s culture. Leaders cannot be effective if they do not understand the traditions and behaviors the organization values. Next, it’s important for the expectations of leaders to be embedded in the company’s ecosystem. One way to do this is to ensure leadership-training courses emphasize the company’s values and accountability. And finally, it’s important that an organization uses data to understand the leadership principles that its employees value the most. Every aspect of a company’s leadership strategy should be driven by data analysis.
