Creating Strong Cultures

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Turnover is a tremendous, costly problem for American companies, and engagement levels are critically low. To combat these problems, it’s becoming increasingly important for managers to try to build positive corporate cultures that will encourage workers to stay. To do so, it’s crucial to realize that a one-size-fits-all approach won’t be successful. “The first mistake that leaders make in working to retain employees is looking for just one silver bullet or golden egg that will work for everyone,” says Dana Manciagli, a global career expert, author, and columnist. Different people will stay with a company for different reasons, so retention plans should be as diverse as the workforce, and they should create different strategies for different individuals based on age, gender, and career goals. It’s also important that a company clearly define its core values. By defining a company identity, team members will gain a sense of pride and ownership. They will have knowledge of place, and an understanding that what they do is valuable. Feedback systems and performance metrics are also important in creating a strong corporate culture. Without clear expectations and an honest reward system in place, employees too easily find themselves dealing with fear and uncertainty.
