Diversity Training Video Creates Issue for Religious Employee

Monday, September 12, 2016

Diversity training is causing a stir in Illinois, where an employee at the Social Security Administration (SSA) says he would rather be fired than view a video that he says promotes an agenda and a lifestyle he does not support. David Hall, who has worked for the SSA for 14 years, says that being forced to watch a video on diversity in the workplace, which discusses LGBT employees in the workplace, violates his religious rights. He was suspended without pay for refusing to participate in the training course. “In support of an inclusive work environment, as well as exemplary customer service, the Social Security Administration recently announced a diversity and inclusion training on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community to our employees," the SSA said in a statement. "This mandatory video training reminds our employees of their responsibility, as representatives of the agency, to provide the highest levels of service to our customers. The training includes a brief session on tips for increasing cultural awareness in a diverse and inclusive environment.” Hall has retained counsel, and has requested a religious accommodation to opt out of watching the video.
