Efforts Growing to Boost Employee Engagement

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

If Gallup’s numbers—and the myriad articles and blog posts they've spawned—are to be believed, employee engagement levels in America are abysmal. According to a recent poll, less than 32 percent of the nation’s workers are engaged at their jobs. But should this figure be taken at face value? Recently an HR tech company, Quantum Workplace, published its in-depth look at engagement trends and declared that nearly 66 percent of employees were engaged last year—more than double the Gallup number. The company also found the South was the most engaged region, and the Midwest was the least engaged. Also of note, Quantum found more than 75 percent of workers are content to stay at their jobs, even though transitioning might be a viable option. So which study is accurate? The answer is that both offer a good look at engagement. The results depend heavily on sample sizes, respondent selection, and the specific vocabulary used in poll questions. But despite the two differing numbers from each study, one commonality is their recognition that employee engagement is critical, and that initiatives to boost engagement have become more commonplace during the past 10 years.
