Employee Development: Don’t Be Afraid to Let Them Go

Sunday, June 28, 2015

One of the best tactics for retaining top talent may sound counterintuitive: To keep the best employees, leadership must be willing to let them go. While managers obviously want to keep their best team members on board, it is important to not hoard talent. Instead, management should work to develop employees by investing in them, bolstering their strengths and providing them with opportunities to grow. The best retention strategies are those that focus on the individual employee and encourage that worker's personal and professional development. An organization’s leadership is charged with understanding their team members’ strengths and weaknesses, and investing in them accordingly. This development should not be self-conscious, either. Management should develop employees with the knowledge that their growth may open doors for greater opportunities down the road. Often, employee development is conducted in such a way as to develop internal superstars, and management is hesitant to lose that skill and knowledge to other departments or companies. Good leaders, however, will consider the bigger picture. When employees know the company is taking an interest in them and investing time and resources in their growth, more often than not they will be happy to stay at the organization.
