Engagement Is Real

Friday, April 8, 2016

Managers understand the importance of engagement, but it’s a nebulous concept to nail down. However vague the idea seems, it’s important for leadership to understand the “realness” of employee engagement and realize it isn’t simply a state of mind or an emotional blanket that keeps employees happy and content. Engagement is a valid psychological state, measured by hard metrics relating to performance and productivity. It must be taken seriously, fostered, and prioritized to achieve high levels of organizational success. There are several ways most managers drive measurable engagement. The first way is through recognition. Rewarding an employee’s efforts helps boost individual engagement, but engagement is also bolstered across the board when the workforce sees that employee recognition efforts are being taken seriously. Planning is also essential. Engagement doesn’t happen organically; uncovering what drives engagement in a particular workforce takes careful research and observation, and a plan to ensure maximum effectiveness. Communication is also key in driving engagement. Promoting safe, open lines of communication is the only way management can discover what employees really want.
