Farmers Insurance Uses Virtual Reality to Train New Claims Adjusters

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Virtual reality (VR) training isn’t just for warehouse workers and truck drivers—add Farmers Insurance to the list of organizations looking to the virtual world to better train their employees. The company, which is affiliated with the much larger Zurich Insurance Group, has begun a major push to train its numerous claims adjusters with the help of VR headsets. By the end of the year, about 50 employees will have used the headsets to participate in training programs to help adjusters perform better out in the field. Keith Daly, the company’s chief claims officer, says Farmers plans for hundreds more to be trained virtually over the next year, and eventually, the company’s aim is to train all of its thousands of adjusters using the new technology. As part of the training, prospective adjusters inspect a model home that has been damaged by water and fire. It’s impractical to create real-life structures damaged with every possible problem, so VR will allow trainers to test adjusters on multiple issues without having to create them in the real world. “In virtual reality, we can do that stuff almost instantaneously,” said Daly. “We believe that virtual reality is going to be able to shorten the learning curve [for workers] because we will be able to provide so many more experiences.”
