Fighting Burnout in a Pandemic

Thursday, April 23, 2020

This is a challenging time for many organizations, and for the individual employees who make up those teams. The challenges of working from home coupled with health fear and financial insecurity can easily get on top of workers, leading to increased cases of burnout. During these times, employers need to be particularly aware of the warning signs of burnout—frequent absenteeism, lack of involvement in social activities, reduced productivity, and disinterested or nervous body language—and intervene accordingly. Burnout can be caused by numerous factors, not the least of which are excessive stress and feelings of isolation—causes that are in abundance right now. To prevent burnout, concentrate on prioritizing the mental health of your teams. Prioritize work-life balance and schedule frequent check-ins with team members to see how they’re doing, both personally and professionally. Be sure expectations are realistic and clearly communicated and measured appropriately. Remain optimistic and offer support where it is needed. Team members are looking to leadership right now for guidance, so make sure you’re providing it appropriately.
