Gender Diversity in the Indian Workforce

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Indian companies are working hard to solve diversity problems. According to human resource experts in the country, in order to achieve acceptable levels of gender diversity in the workplace, leaders need to have a “conscious and balanced” approach to bring in more female employees, while at the same time strengthening efforts to retain those with 3-5 years of experience. And these efforts are not without concrete benefit. Studies have shown that in both the private and public sector, the more diverse a workforce becomes, the more successful it will be. However, in India, more than 50 percent of women in the workforce drop their careers before reaching retirement. Inequality and gender bias may be a factor. Studies show that generally speaking, Indian men and women start their careers on equal footing, but within 12 years, women end up making significantly less money than men and receive far fewer developmental opportunities in the country. "It is vital that organizations closely examine their retention strategies,” Catalyst India WRC Executive Director Shachi Irde said. “Firms should build a system of checks and balances that support diversity and inclusion at all levels including engaging in conversation with women during the initial stages to establish their career aspirations.”
