Georgia Attracts Industry With Dedicated Training Centers

Monday, June 1, 2015

State lawmakers in Georgia are hoping to expand on a successful program that has attracted industry and promoted job growth in the state: constructing training centers dedicated to industry. The first center was built at the site of a Kia Motors assembly plant in West Point; a second recently opened in Athens and a third center is planned in Pooler. The idea for these centers originated at the state’s technical schools. About a decade ago, industry recruiters began promising employee training to large companies for free if they would relocate major factories to Georgia. The program, called Quick Start, saw quite a bit of success as it helped these companies hit the ground running, increasing their productivity and saving on costs. The new centers will not be dedicated to any one company, but will help train individuals beyond what a college classroom can accommodate. The new Athens center will be focused on the biomedical industry, and its graduates will more than likely feed nearby Baxter International, a healthcare company. The Pooler facility will be dedicated to sophisticated manufacturing.
