Google Addresses Mental Health Through Resilience Training Videos

Friday, November 27, 2020

As the global pandemic grinds on, Google has been prioritizing its employees’ mental health and well-being through resilience training, particularly in video format. “COVID-19 is something we weren’t anticipating or frankly prepared for from a mental skills approach,” Lauren Whitt, Google’s wellness manager and resilience lead, told CNBC. She’s tasked with “helping Googlers meet the moment they’re facing today.” They are doing so in the form of short, on-demand videos focused on specific topics like sleep, breathing, parenting, and managing anxiety. “Video content around breathing and sleep are the most meaningful ways we can rest and recover as well as momentary detachment throughout the workday,” Whitt said. She added that another popular video was about “meeting times of uncertainty with authenticity and humility.” The company views resilience as a skill, she says. That means it can be built, practiced, and cultivated. In less than a month, more than 30,000 Google employees have watched the videos, and the company has hosted approximately 15 virtual events to help raise awareness about mental health issues and prioritize well-being.
