Google's Diversity Training: Failure or Future Success?

Monday, February 15, 2016

Google was one of the first high-profile tech companies to implement a diversity training program aimed at exposing the unconscious biases of its employees. But while it was successful in getting other tech companies to follow suit, Google’s training has yet to affect its workforce makeup. When the training was launched in 2014, Google’s workforce was 30 percent female and 70 percent male. Around 2 percent of its workforce was African American, 3 percent was Hispanic, 30 percent was Asian, and 61 percent was white. Now, a year later, the needle has hardly moved. The only significant change was in the percentages of Asian and white employees, now 31 and 60 percent, respectively. Although some may see this as a failure on Google’s part, the company argues that changing ingrained beliefs and behaviors takes time. According to a Google blog post, “Combating our unconscious biases is hard, because they don't feel wrong; they feel right. But it's necessary to fight against bias in order to create a work environment that supports and encourages diverse perspectives and people.” The company adds that it’s optimistic that the training will have a significant impact in the future.
