Helpfulness and Engagement

Monday, February 9, 2015

By now, employers are well aware of the link between employee engagement and productivity. Even a 5 percent increase in engagement can increase revenue by up to 3 percent. However, most companies are struggling to engage their employees. Depending on the study, anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of the American workforce is either passively or actively disengaged at their job. But one concept—helpfulness—might be able to turn that around. Greg Becker, CEO of Silicon Valley Bank, one of Fortune magazine’s best places to work, says a focus on helpfulness keeps his employees engaged and satisfied. Specifically, he says it’s important for employees to understand how their work helps clients, and to know their work makes a difference. "We make sure that each and every one of our employees understands how we help our clients and how they fit into that," Becker said. "We're always looking for ways to connect what employees do directly to the success of the client. This helps employees to enjoy their work more, and it also boosts their engagement."
