Helping Employees to Address Mental Health Issues

Tuesday, December 18, 2018

While mental health issues are rarely discussed in the workplace, great strides have been made to eliminate its stigma. Focusing on worker wellness, offering meditation breaks, and legitimizing mental health days have all grown in popularity, but there’s still work to be done on this front. If a company really wants to make its employees' mental health a priority, first, it needs to signal that mental health matters. There’s a lot of concern that opening up about the state of one’s mental health at work might limit their opportunities or might be seen as a sign of weakness, but senior leaders can do a lot to quiet these concerns by openly discussing the company’s desire to actively help struggling employees or discussing their own experiences. Training is also an important tool. Employees should be trained to recognize signs of stress or deteriorating mental health, and managers should be trained to identify these warning signs in members of their team. This is one major step forward in establishing a more accepting and receptive culture in terms of validating and legitimizing the mental health concerns of the workforce.
