Hide Your Phone When You Get to the Office

Sunday, December 2, 2018

Want to be more productive at work? You should hide your phone. According to a recent study in The Journal of the Association of Consumer Research, the biggest stumbling block to professional productivity is your smartphone sitting on your desk. Even when it’s powered off and even if you’re really successful at ignoring it, the presence of a smartphone “reduces available cognitive capacity, which the study’s authors refer to as brain drain. “If it’s in the environment, it’s almost like it’s calling out to us,” said Adrian Ward, assistant professor in the marketing department at the University of Texas at Austin. “We’re automatically drawn to it.” It’s that draw that’s the problem, Ward explains. “Now the problem becomes not to figure out what to pay attention to but resisting that automatic pull. You actually have to devote some of your cognitive resources to resisting.” Not ready to put your smartphone under lock and key once you get to the office? That’s fine. But in order to boost productivity, Ward encourages people to simply be aware of how much of their conscious thoughts are occupied by their phone. Understanding this can lead to better outcomes.
