Hiring for Culture Means Prioritizing Training

Friday, February 21, 2020

There are two main schools of thought when it comes to hiring. Do you hire for skills or for culture? In today’s labor landscape, culture seems to be the clear winner. Skills are something that can be developed, but the more intangible “fit” isn’t something that can be taught. However, if this approach is taken, that means there will be a greater burden on the organization to provide training to new hires who were great for the culture but may not have the requisite hard and soft skills to be completely successful. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. Once a robust onboarding and training program is in place, the pool of potential candidates will expand, and current employees will have less reason to look for opportunities elsewhere. To make sure these programs are effective, clear learning outcomes need to be set, and they need to be evaluated. Training programs that just “go through the motions” are a tremendous waste of time and resources.
