Hiring for Small Businesses

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Finding quality employees is a difficult prospect, especially for small businesses. For one, a lack of brand recognition that would naturally draw top talent can make hiring tough, and the absence of an in-house recruiting department to seek out and screen applicants can make hiring seem overwhelming. In fact, a quarter of small businesses said their biggest challenge in 2015 will be finding and hiring qualified employees, according to a recent study. But there are a few ways that small businesses can mitigate the difficulties of hiring. First, a business should polish its company story, because candidates are drawn to organizations with a compelling narrative. Next, a strong online presence should be forged, with particular attention paid to an organization’s official website and social media profiles. Well-written job descriptions will also help separate the less-qualified candidates from the standout recruits. A job description should summarize specific responsibilities, outline the tasks the candidate will be expected to perform, and present the minimum skills and experience levels required.
