In Fast-Paced Industries, Training Is More Useful Than Hiring

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

In the fast-paced world of IT, it’s becoming increasingly common to see companies rely more on training than hiring new talent to remain competitive. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are more unfilled technology positions today than at any point since 2000. However, rather than hiring to close these gaps, tech organizations are increasingly utilizing employee training—particularly e-earning modules—because it is almost always less expensive to train existing talent than it is to hire new workers. This is even more true in North America, where the United States and Canada offer tax credits for training and retaining workers. "The pressure is on to do more with less," says Rob Doty, co-founder and managing partner of KnowledgeNet. "How do you do that? We think training is the answer." The biggest opportunity for most tech companies is training workers in future-leaning topics, such as data science, machine learning, data lakes, sentiment analysis, and predictive analytics. With the increasing sophistication of e-learning solutions, training has the ability to remain nimble and flexible in a way that reactive hiring can never be.
