Is A Degree More Important Than Experience?

Monday, November 9, 2020

Lying on a resume is a big deal. According to a study conducted by TopResume, 97 percent of HR professionals and hiring managers said that if they uncovered a lie in a candidate's resume, they would reconsider, if not immediately dismiss, that candidate. That said, the severity of the lie is important to consider. Technical skills and proficiencies might be embellished slightly, but lying about an academic degree? That's inadmissible, right? Maybe. But consider why a candidate might be lying about their scholastic credentials. They likely have the relevant experience but don't necessarily hold the degree the job posting requires. That begs the question: How heavily should degrees be weighed against real-world experience? If you're looking for a software engineer, do you want the person with a master's in computer science that graduated 10 years ago or do you want the person who has up-to-date, real-world experience doing that work but who might have only received their GED? In the modern talent landscape, it's time we seriously consider how much a degree is actually worth.
