Leadership Through Self-Care

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Leadership is critical for the success of any organization, but it is particularly important during times of crisis. In uncertain and stressful times, there’s a more profound sense of urgency among managers to keep their teams healthy, productive, and safe. One of the best ways leaders can accomplish this during the pandemic is—perhaps a little counter-intuitively—to take care of their own needs. By modeling self-care, leaders can avoid the negative consequences of acting under extreme stress. Even the most level-headed bosses quickly can become frazzled if they aren’t taking care of themselves, and those feelings and actions will rub off on their teams. Managers need to convey to their teams that they are sensitive to the effects of the outbreaks, both professional and personal. They should monitor for signs of struggle in their team members and react with compassion and empathy. Now isn’t the time for tough love. Managers should also model healthy work habits during this time. Communicate clearly, be available, and promote a healthy work-life balance for yourself and your team.
