Leadership’s Role in Boosting Engagement

Saturday, March 10, 2018

According to Gallup, employee engagement in America is holding steady at about 32 percent—meaning a frightening 68 percent of the workforce is disengaged in their jobs. Experts say this disengagement creates a drain on productivity that costs the U.S. economy between $450 billion and $550 billion annually. There are many reasons for these startlingly low engagement statistics, but one of the most helpful tools in boosting rates is through leadership. It’s nearly impossible to have a fully engaged team if leadership isn’t also engaged. Management is the model a team will follow, so if team leaders aren’t engaged, neither will be the team. To help bolster engagement, it’s also important to be seen. People want to know they are working with their boss, not for their boss. It's crucial that leadership spend time walking around, talking with team members, getting a sense for what’s going on, and taking a personal interest in their work. Enthusiasm is infectious and needs to be modeled by leadership; it must also be genuine, because employees will be able to spot phonies. True enthusiasm should be expressed, through words, actions, and demeanor.
