Lessons Learned for Successfully Working From Home

Saturday, November 7, 2020

Remote work isn't unique to the pandemic, but many people are working remotely for the first time. These individuals are quickly finding out that there are many differences between traditional, in-office work and working from their homes beyond the location. There are more distractions, there's less definition to the day, the wardrobe is more relaxed. There is a distinct list of benefits and drawbacks that many had never considered until remote work was thrust upon them. Still, there are lessons to be learned from those who have been doing this for a long time. First, time and space are important. Creating structure is one of the most important elements of successful remote work. Dedicate a space where work occurs that is free from distractions. Ideally, only work should happen in the workspace. Next, it's important to set up clear boundaries around personal time. While working remotely, it's easy to find that work never really ever stops. While it's inevitable that you'll check your email while watching TV after dinner, there does need to be a definition between personal and professional time. Finally, it's important to prioritize connections. Remote work can become isolating and lonely. Use video conferencing and turn cameras on. Reach out and talk to people instead of sending emails, and schedule one-on-ones with colleagues.
