Leveraging Health Benefits to Increase Engagement

Tuesday, June 30, 2015

The Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010. At that time, many experts thought it would break the well-established connection between employment and health insurance in the United States; however, a recent study of more than 2,000 U.S. employees revealed it has done no such thing. Approximately 90 percent of respondents indicated that they would be less satisfied if their company dropped their health insurance packages, and only 5 percent thought they would get more for their money using the new system’s exchanges. About half said their benefits package plays a major part in their decision to stay at their current job, and those that didn’t were less likely to be engaged at work. So what does this mean for employers? In order to increase engagement, employers can make these valuable resources more helpful and transparent for employees. Wellness promotion programs can be made more prominent, and the HR department can be more upfront with employees regarding changes to complicated benefits packages.
