Managerial Tactics Born of the Pandemic That Should Fall by the Wayside

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

The pandemic brought with it many challenges and uncertainties, particularly for leadership. However, now that we are nine months in, it may be time to rethink some of the early tools managers employed to transition their teams and keep up with productivity in the face of a global health crisis. In short, it's time to take a look at what worked and what didn't in the early months of the outbreak. One, it may be time to reconsider the over-reliance on agility. The traditional wisdom is that a company should be able to turn on a dime during times of crisis, but this agility needs to be measured against reason. Sometimes there's a fine line between being nimble and inviting chaos. Also, it's time to drop the act of having all the answers and being a "rock" for the team. As the pandemic continues to drag on and stress continues to roil, it may be tempting for managers to pretend like they know what's going to happen next or that they are impervious to the storm. Employees see right through this, and it's isolating and off-putting. Show vulnerability, listen to employees' concerns, and empathize with them.
