Managers: The Most Neglected Employees

Thursday, April 9, 2015

A new study has found that managers are “America’s most neglected employee” sub-group. Titled America’s Workforce: A Revealing Study of Corporate America’s Most Neglected Employee, and conducted by Root, an Ohio-based strategy execution company, the study polled individuals “involved in manager training programs.” The findings were not positive: “Managers are often ill-prepared for success in a leadership role,” the report states. “Many of them aren't trained at all in how to engage, coach, or develop their teams. And if they are trained, it’s through programs that aren't aligned with company strategy, lack the support of senior leadership and are delivered as once and done.” The study’s secondary findings were equally bleak for managers. According to the report, 38 percent of respondents felt their company didn't value their impact. Investment in frontline managers was also a low priority. Only 28 percent of respondents said their companies had prioritized their development in the past year. Most companies were instead focused on reducing expenses, improving customer service, and upgrading technologies, according to the survey.
