Managing Workers and Maintaining Culture in an All-Remote Environment

Wednesday, April 8, 2020

The quick adoption of remote work has left many managers (and their teams) reeling, trying to piece together workflows that make sense and keeping some sibilance of culture intact. But how can you do that when your team isn’t used to working remotely? First, deal with team members’ insecurities and doubts. These two feelings will kill the motivation of your remote workforce. Have measures for accountability in place, as well as collaboration tools to keep workers visible and working together. Second, manage expectations and put the right communication tools in place. Constant monitoring and check-in meetings will kill productivity, as will not effectively and appropriately communicating with the team. Provide support and training for employees that are struggling. Working remotely has challenges traditional office work doesn’t. Managers need to be understanding of that and help their employees navigate as best they can. Finally, create boundaries around time that work both ways. Employees should set their hours and stick to them, and managers need to be respectful of that. No one should be expected to be available 24 hours a day simply because they aren’t in an office.
