Mentoring Millennials

Tuesday, December 29, 2015

For some, managing increasing numbers of Millennial workers is challenging. This new generation often has unfamiliar work styles and communication patterns that are sometimes viewed negatively, especially when it comes to a perceived need for direction and a lack of established work skills. But this generation may be more receptive to learning than others in today’s workforce. Millennials report that in many situations they prioritize instruction, training, and mentoring—even over financial benefits. According to a survey conducted by Virtuali, Millennials think that mentoring is the most effective and desired type of career development training, and many are dissatisfied with the current corporate mentoring landscape. For a company’s mentoring program to effectively reach Millennial workers, several elements must come into play. First, the program must be highly customizable, because Millennials see themselves as individuals and wish to be treated as such. Begin the program with a personality assessment and then match them with a mentor of similar disposition. Additionally, make various training and development modules available so Millennial workers can decide which modes and methods best suit their purposes. A blended approach is the most effective way to reach these young workers. Additionally, provide feedback nearly every step of the way.
