Mindfulness Matters

Monday, December 28, 2015

In today’s fast-paced business world, it’s rare that employees are encouraged to take the time to stop, focus on the present, and think. Slowing down might even run contrary to the culture and practices encouraged by an organization. However, as new research on the idea of mindfulness develops, many organizations are beginning to explore how mindfulness can increase self-reflection, openness, and thoughtfulness. For many companies, mindfulness is beginning to be seen as a tool that can boost employee well-being as well as profit. Practicing mindfulness—the pursuit of becoming fully engaged in the present moment—helps workers and management alike be more productive and effective by directly focusing on the most immediate task at hand. Effectively multitasking is nearly impossible; workers who are too focused on what they must accomplish for the rest of the day, or who are obsessed with past mistakes and failures, are distracted from the present moment and whatever their immediate job may be. On the other hand, when decisions are made deliberately and mindfully, employees are more likely to accomplish tasks completely and in more creative ways. Several well-known companies, such as Target, Google, and General Mills, are among a new group of organizations investing in mindfulness training.
