An employee’s paycheck is one of the most important ways to keep that person engaged and productive; however, there are also many nonmonetary methods to keep workers motivated. One of the most important is to keep them challenged. Smart, ambitious workers need mental stimulation, and if employees feel bored they might start looking for another, more challenging role at another company. In the same vein, managers should strive to make work fun. Allow breaks and room for expression, and employees will start going the extra mile. Employees should also be made to feel appreciated. Managers who offer feedback and give recognition where it’s due will help employees feel valued and increase their levels of engagement and loyalty. Most importantly, though, managers should act as facilitators for employee growth. By empowering them to do their jobs well and offering them clear paths for promotion and advancement within the company, managers can ensure their employees will remain actively engaged and productive.
