Ontario Government Makes Grant Money Available for Training

Monday, January 26, 2015

The Ontario government is making grant money available to the Brand Employment Centre, operated out of St. Leonard’s Community Services, to help employers in the province train new employees. Program operators recently held a meeting with local businesses to explain how the Canada-Ontario Job Grant works. Offered through Employment Ontario, the employer-driven training program is a cost-sharing initiative that makes as much as $10,000 available to local employers to improve the skills of their employees. The grant money covers two-thirds of the costs of training; employers cover the rest. “It’s very, very important that we as a labor market—as a community—increase the skills of the workers that are currently in the workforce to meet the demands of the employer now,” said Marilyn Kaus, director of employment services for St. Leonard’s. Grants are available to all companies, big and small, for any amount between $300 and $10,000. The goal is to increase the skills of workers, thereby increasing their value, with the possibility of promotion and the ability to train others within an organization.
