People Leave Due to Lack of Support

Tuesday, December 4, 2018

Turnover is inevitable, but managers can absolutely work to reduce its impact. In a recent study by Mental Health America, the main cause for employee turnover is simple: lack of support and recognition. And the problem is pervasive—about 70 percent of respondents said they were actively looking for a new job or seriously considering it. The survey also revealed other troubling facts. Only 21 percent of respondents felt they were paid appropriately, 77 percent believed skilled employees were not given proper recognition, and 36 percent felt they couldn’t rely on their supervisor for support. This is a failure of leadership, and something all managers should work to change. Leaders at all levels need to commit time and resources to support their employees and build lasting, meaningful relationships with them. Managers who adopt a “servant leadership” style and recognize and respond to their employees' needs with compassion are much more likely to retain talented workers.
