Perfection Can Be the Enemy of Productivity

Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Everyone would like to cross off more items from their to-do lists every day, but productivity isn’t simply about getting more done; rather, it’s about the tasks you select to do and how well you do them. This can be hard for perfectionists, who may be reluctant to designate decisions as unimportant. If you’re accustomed to micromanaging every aspect of your professional life, everything automatically has significance and is worthy of your full attention. Another aspect of perfectionism that can stand in the way of productivity is a moral obligation to over-deliver. This can be driven by anxiety, imposter syndrome, or any number of insecurities, but it’s impossible to always give 110 percent. Finally, perfectionists tend to beat themselves up when they aren’t consistent with their good habits or avoid anything they aren’t sure they can deliver with 100 percent consistency. Flexibility is key to good mental health and will be helpful for productivity in the long run.
