Prioritizing Employees’ Mental Health

Friday, April 3, 2020

During the outbreak most employers have placed renewed attention on the health of their employees. Protective gear has been handed out, work-from-home issues have been mandated, and best safety practices have been established. While these steps are important, it’s critical that employers consider the mental health of their employees as well. A person’s mental health is foundational to their overall health, and the extreme stress, fear, and uncertainty that many are experiencing are taking a toll. These feelings can be the precursors of more chronic conditions like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. And even when the outbreak slows down, these feelings and conditions will endure. Additionally, as workers are asked to upend the way they’re used to working, the potential for burnout is even greater. Now more than ever, leaders need to prioritize the work-life balances of their team members and react with empathy to their problems. A healthy, motivated workforce will be critical to an organization's survival through this ordeal, and the foundation of that workforce is mental health.
