Raising a Replacement

Monday, September 14, 2015

Managers should always be looking for new talent, and this includes individuals who could potentially take the reins in senior positions when the time comes. According to Sharlyn Laurby, a writer for HR Bartender, “If a manager takes their role seriously, then they are constantly searching for talent. They are encouraging employees to learn. They are sharing knowledge by coaching and mentoring. And they are supporting employee growth and development.” One of the best ways to support this growth in employees is to never stop training them. Most companies view training as something that is accomplished during the first few months of an employee’s career, and then it is never revisited. However, in order to have a fresh replacement ready upon retirement, managers should never stop helping their team members hone their skills, become experts in their industry, and develop the soft skills necessary to excel professionally. Feedback is also crucial in this process. If possible, a manager should meet with their team members at least once a week to offer encouragement, constructive criticism, and evaluate performance.
