Remote and Retained

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

As telecommunications technology has proliferated, the rise of the remote worker has been dramatic. And while there are pros and cons to managing a remote workforce, one definite pro is its positive impact on retention rates. With the freedom to live wherever they please and work more flexible hours, employees are less likely to feel overly encumbered, generally have higher engagement levels, and are less likely to seek employment elsewhere. Managers are catching on to this idea, and the trend is growing. About 40 percent of U.S. employees currently work remotely either full or part time, and studies show that home-based employees are more productive on average by about 13 percent. And if employees don’t currently have a work from home option, they more than likely want one. According to recent studies, 80 to 90 percent of employees say they would want to work from home at least part of the week. In addition to an improved work-life balance, it’s estimated that a home-based employee saves $2,000 to $7,000 per year on the costs of commuting, work clothes, and tax benefits.
