Remote Workers Are No Longer the Exception, They’re the Rule

Sunday, January 20, 2019

The nature of work is changing, and recently those changes have been occurring at a much more rapid pace. Much of this is technologically driven—we’re now more connected than we’ve ever been, and because of this an entirely new class of employee has emerged: the remote worker. In 1995, only 9 percent of the U.S. workforce had the opportunity to telecommute at least some of the time. By 2015, that number grew to 37 percent, according to Gallup. By the next year, 2016, 43 percent of workers reported working off-site at least part of the time. And these numbers are growing. For context, a recent study of 500 managers and executives found 53 percent of U.S. companies continue to have traditional office spaces and schedules, with nearly every employee coming in at least four days a week. Compare that to 37 percent that have a main office with some people working remotely, and 10 percent with no office space at all. This obviously has created new challenges for the development of workplace culture; but if the trend holds, managers need to understand the remote worker is quickly becoming the norm.
