Skills Are More Important Than Experience to Potential Employers

Sunday, January 6, 2019

There are currently over 7 million unfilled jobs in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This indicates the country currently has one of the tightest labor markets in its history, and many experts argue one of the largest skills gaps. This has prompted many organizations to be more lenient in their requirements for potential candidates—organizations like Google, Apple, IBM, and Bank of America no longer require college degrees for certain roles, for example. This is indicative of a shift away from the traditional need for experience and titles, and a heavier emphasis on a candidate's skill sets. "We actually value skills over experience in the grand scheme of things," says Facebook’s vice president of human resources, Janelle Gale. "Apply if you have the relevant skills even if you don't have the right experience, because we're looking underneath the surface for what's really going to matter here and that's what skills you can bring to the table." What skills are in high demand? According to LinkedIn, which analyzed scores of job postings to determine what companies are looking for, a combination of hard and soft skills makes candidates the most attractive. The soft skills companies are looking for include creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and time management. The hard skills include cloud computing, artificial intelligence, analytical reasoning, people management, and UX design.
