Soft Skills Are Important to Long-Term Retention

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

According to research and training firm Leadership IQ, 46 percent of new hires will either leave or underwhelm employers within three years. But this isn’t because they lack the intellect to perform; it’s because of inadequate soft skills. After tracking 20,000 newly hired employees at 312 private, public, healthcare, and business organizations, their study uncovered that about 30 percent of new hires lacked the “hard” skills needed to perform adequately, but 89 percent of the failures were attributed to attitude, including temperament, low emotional intelligence, poor teamwork, inability to handle constructive feedback, or lack of motivation. The study demonstrates why it's important to not only focus on a candidate’s hard skills and experience during the interview and hiring process, but also select for those less tangible personality traits—which might end up being more important in the long run in terms of retention and professional success.
