Team-Wide Resilience Comes Down to Two Factors: People and Perspective

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

To make it through this crisis, business leaders need to be concerned with one factor business: resilience. Although this concept is multifaceted, it’s really down to people and perspective. There are three predictive factors as to whether or not an individual will exhibit resilience: if they have high levels of confidence in their skills, if they have disciplined routines for their work, and if they have support from their peers. While these factors are more difficult to foster in nontraditional work environments, it’s not impossible. Check in individually with employees and ask them directly how comfortable they are working remotely, how they are organizing their workflows, and how they could feel more supported by the team. For the perspective element, managers should encourage team members to accept things as they are. Neuroscience suggests fear and anxiety limit a person’s ability to envision the future and form creative solutions to problems. Ask team members what their plans are if they must stay in place for longer than anticipated. How comfortable are they with that prospect? Are they thinking realistically? The answers to these questions will give you a sense of how resilient they may be in the future.
