The Building Blocks of Cybersecurity

Wednesday, March 9, 2016

As employees increasingly rely on technology to connect them with their co-workers, cybersecurity is becoming critically important. And this doesn't necessarily mean network. It has more to do with how aware employees are of cyber threats. According to CopTIA’s Trends in IT Security study, more than half of all security breaches are the result of human error. Given this built-in vulnerability, most hackers target end users, rather than the networks they use. Because of this, all employees should receive cybersecurity awareness training, particularly in the following three areas. First, employees should understand network security. Using public Wi-Fi networks for work-related correspondence should be absolutely forbidden. These networks are completely unsecure, yet 69 percent of survey respondents said they’ve accessed work data from unprotected connections. Additionally, employees should be trained on crafting secure passwords. Poor password habits makes a hacker’s job too easy. Passwords should be refreshed often, and multiple passwords should be used for multiple accounts. Lastly, employees need to practice authentication awareness. Two-factor authentication provides an additional layer of security, and can be a savior when password security is breached.
