The Company’s Role in Closing Digital Skills Gaps

Monday, May 7, 2018

As the workplace becomes increasingly digitized, the resulting technical skills gap continues to grow. Many organizations experience friction in the adoption of new technologies because they expect employees to already possess the skills necessary to wield them effectively. The mistake of assuming employees will understand any tech tool thrown at them usually ends with frustrated workers, managers, and executives, as well as a lot of wasted time and resources. Many would argue it’s not the employee’s responsibility to develop the tech skills needed to utilize every digital resource a company might choose to deploy; instead, that responsibility falls on the employer to provide adequate skills training and resources for the tools they expect their employees to use. However, this isn’t as simple as providing a one-off digital skills course. Organizations instead must implement comprehensive, strategic training processes that employees of all skill levels can access and benefit from. This is not an easy task; but by acknowledging the digital skills gap and understanding the organization’s role in closing it, companies can become more effective and productive.
