Gone are the days of starting in the mailroom and working up to a corner office. While nostalgia remains for those days, business leaders need to be realistic about the current talent market. The modern workforce is so competitive that most workers’ career paths involve leaving one business for another, or even vacillating between industries, so to keep talent retained in the long term, an organization needs to offer one thing above all else: employee development. With a focus on individual employees’ growth, an organization will help that individual work to build a career rather than just hopping from job to job. This will increase loyalty, reduce turnover, and help that organization become more competitive in the labor market. Employees will also become more engaged if they know their employer cares about their development, and they’ll be far more likely to remain productive in the long-term. Instead of viewing training as a one-off period with a start and a conclusion, industry leaders should view training as an ongoing process that helps develop their employees professionally.
