The Rise of the In-Office Workout

Monday, July 4, 2016

Wellness programs are usually considered a perk used to attract new, young talent, but there are real monetary benefits to having a healthy, happy workforce—so much so that many companies are moving workouts to the workplace. According to a recent report, 70 percent of employers across the United States offer some version of a wellness program, and with good reason. According to a 2014 study by the RAND Corporation, every dollar spent on employee wellness yields a return on investment of $1.50 in lowered insurance premiums and healthcare costs. “Employers may have started offering wellness programs because of healthcare cost savings, but there’s so much more that happens when you have a robust program in place that offers benefits such as gym memberships and on-site fitness classes,” says Juliet Rodman, the co-founder of Wellness Corporate Solutions. Rodman leads workout classes in workplaces in Bethesda, Maryland. In-office workout sessions are becoming more popular, she says, with her clients including Discovery Communications, Marriott International, and Honest Tea. “When people ask what I like about working at Honest Tea, it’s one of the top things I list,” says Wendy Derbak, an associate brand manager who lives in Gaithersburg. “It goes a long way toward creating a sense of work-life balance and a feeling of community among the group that participates.”
