The Science Behind Cybersecurity Training

Thursday, January 12, 2017

Although it’s well known that cybersecurity is becoming critically important to the success of any business, there is a startling lack of interest in providing employees with the appropriate levels of awareness training. According to a survey conducted by Enterprise Management Associates, around 56 percent of employees have received cybersecurity and protocol training. But of this 56 percent, how many organizations are reinforcing the lessons and positive behaviors these training programs are designed to impart? The answer is not many. Too often organizations rely on punitive measures, which only stabilize negative behaviors. Positive reinforcement creates positive change. If security protocols are only discussed when there has been an infraction, it’s hard for employees to make it a part of their day-to-day lives. Rather than relying on training programs to essentially be a list of dos and don’ts, organizations would be better served to condition employee behaviors while appealing to their natural desires to do the right thing.
