The Work-Life Blend
Tuesday, January 19, 2016

The work-life balance, or a line that separates how much time employees work versus how much time they spend on personal activities, might be a myth. First, it’s problematic to differentiate between life and work. That’s because in the real world, work is very much a part of life; the average person spends about 50 percent of his waking life at work. So instead of trying to create an artificial divide, companies should be looking for ways to blend work and life together more seamlessly. One PR firm, Hill+Knowlton, did away with the traditional notion of work-life balance, and instead adopted policies (which the firm calls H+K Inside and H+K Outside) to help support employees at work and at home. “Inside” policies focused on mentoring, training, and recognition programs. Meanwhile, “Outside” policies focused more on items such as fitness reimbursements, expanded holidays, flex time, and remote work. Not only did these policies help employees flow freely between work and the rest of their lives, but employee retention rates jumped five percentage points from 2014 to 2015.
