These Managerial Mistakes Will Kill Engagement

Sunday, November 5, 2017

It’s no secret that business leaders are looking to increase engagement at their organizations, and there is no lack of resources out there promising to do just that. It’s rare, however, that the other side of the coin is discussed—practices that kill engagement. Even the best intentions and most meticulously planned engagement efforts can be derailed by a manager making simple mistakes. Micromanagement is one common mistake that kills engagement. The inability to delegate work and empower employees to act with autonomy is one of the quickest ways to alienate team members. Blame culture is another pitfall many managers simply cannot avoid. If a supervisor is too critical of their team, they shouldn’t be surprised when the team becomes less invested in outcomes. Credit hoarding is another managerial mistake. When managers take credit for the success of their teams, resentment can grow and engagement will suffer. To truly build a culture of engagement, managers need to empower their teams, be supportive when mistakes are made, and give credit where it’s due.
