Those at the Top of Their Game Have This One Thing in Common

Thursday, November 23, 2017

Tim Ferriss, the bestselling author of The 4-Hour Work Week and most recently Tribe of Mentors, found one common feature while interviewing 140 individuals at the tops of their fields—mindfulness. "Despite the fact that these are people from tennis to surfing to cryptocurrency to fill-in-the-blank, like any field you can possibly imagine—some type of morning mindfulness or meditation practice would span I'd say 90 percent of the respondents," Ferriss said. Although he admits mindfulness is a bit of a buzzword in the business world right now, he argues it shouldn’t be written off as a passing fad. "Meditation has a branding problem," he said. "A lot of people would think of yoga instructors playing didgeridoos, swinging dream-catchers over their heads—and they wouldn't be entirely wrong in a lot of cases." Although these issues can be pervasive, he says the actual practice of mindful meditation has numerous benefits. "So meditation, or mindfulness practice, it's really about, to me, decreasing emotional reactivity so you can proactively create your day and create your life; versus, just being a walking reflex that sometimes screws up," he said.
