Training Boomers

Monday, June 27, 2016

There has been much talk about attracting and retaining Millennial workers, but far less discussion has occurred around utilizing an often greatly underused resource: Baby Boomers. In the retail trade industry alone, approximately 38 percent of the 15 million workers are over the age of 50. Smart managers are hiring the next generation of top talent and finding ways to make the most of their entire workforce, regardless of age. One way to do this is to rethink the way employees are trained. For a variety of reasons, the traditional classroom is dying, and microlearning is taking its place. And while a lot of microlearning platforms are tech-based, this doesn’t mean they won’t appeal to the tech-savvy older generations. Baby Boomers generally have a wealth of experiential knowledge, and if they are being trained on concepts they know well, they will quickly become disengaged.
